Democrats Plan for Health Bill Vote Next Week
- The House Budget Committee will begin the reconciliation process on Monday at 3 p.m.
- House members have been warned they will stay in session next week until a vote occurs, even if it runs into the weekend.
- President Obama has postponed his overseas trip until March 21 in anticipation of passing the bill.
- This is part of a two-part strategy to pass legislation.
- First: The House will vote on a Senate passed version of a healthcare bill.
- Second: A vote on fast-track legislative process, known as budget reconciliation, will occur.
- With this approach a simple majority is all that is needed to pass it.
- The total cost of the measure is projected to be $875 billion price tag over 10 years with an overall deficit reduction of $118 billion.
- The Iowa Kickback and Medicare Advantage money for Florida will not be in the reconciliation bill.
- $300 million in additional Medicaid money for Connecticut will remain in the bill.
- A proposal to overhaul the nation's student-loan program. (Adding the student-loan legislation is occurring to help find enough votes for the bill.)
